Invitation to a press conference on the state of the application to lift the ban on the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), in light of the current peace process.
On 11 May 2022 the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) filed a formal application to lift the ban on its activities in Germany, in force since 1993. Three years have passed since — years in which the political situation in Turkey and Kurdistan has grown sharper still. Most recently the peace initiative launched by Abdullah Öcalan, made public in a statement on 27 February 2025, led to the convening of a PKK congress to declare the party's self-dissolution. Yet the Turkish state has so far not created the legal and political basis the PKK demanded for putting that dissolution into practice. On the contrary: the attacks continue. The German state, too, maintains its policy of criminalisation.
Against this background, a number of questions arise
- How should the current position of the Turkish state — and of the German state — be assessed?
- What happens next with the activity ban and the continuing criminalisation of Kurdish organisations, associations and activities in Germany?
- What stage has the application reached?
- Which legal and political steps come next?
- And what role could the new federal government play in actively supporting the peace process?
To report on these developments and on the current state of the proceedings, we warmly invite you to the press conference.
